Planter’s Punch

Planter’s Punch - Punch drinks go back centuries to the earliest known reference to a “Punch” recipe dates to 1596, which was happily consumed by some English travelers in India. The word “Punch” is derived of the Hindustani word , Panch, which means “five” - as in the number of ingredients in traditional punch. As the trade routes lengthened and expanded, the pleasures of Punch went along for the ride. From the Indus peninsula to the British Isles and the Continent. Remember, rum was cheap for the English settlers, so Rum Punch crossed the Atlantic to Jamestown and beyond to the Caribbean.

In the West Indies, there is a rhyme that goes along with Punch to help you remember how to make it: One of sour, two of sweet, 3 of strong (that would be rum), four of weak (juices), and by this time….the fifth ingredient had been lost. But, each island and area added their own spices (cinnamon, clove & nutmeg) and local ingredients to give us the cornucopia of delights that punch brings to the world.

In a drink mixing cup of 4-6 ice cubes and some crushed ice add:

  • Lime Juice

  • Demerara Syrup

  • St. Elizabeth’s Allspice Dram

  • Appleton Estate 12 Year Old Blended Jamaican Rum

  • Angostura Bitters

Flash blend and open pour into your favorite collins glass or footed goblet.

  • Garnish with a sprig of mint. Enjoy!
