Beach Bum Berry’s Zombie - This classic cocktail has a reputation… well earned ;-) Actually, it has varied reputation. Most people hear “Zombie”, and they think of a drink that will take the paint off of your car, or de-rust your tools. While a Zombie certainly packs a punch, what it really delivers is a balanced, tasty cocktail. In its original form, it has a story that goes like this…”A classic dating back to 1934. Created by Donn Beach ( how apropos!) after months of tinkering and research referred to as his “mender of broken dreams”.... or certainly the cause of some lingering hangovers ;-) But the story goes that a very hungover traveling salesman asked for a stiff drink to get him through a very tough meeting. He later reported back that he ‘felt like the living dead - it made a Zombie out of me! ‘“
This rum (Hamilton’s Beach Bum Berry Blend was made especially for a Zombie. This blend is a mix of Jamaican, Puerto Rican, and Demerara rums and it shows the traits of all three. Jamaican esters show off banana and clove while the Puerto Rican and Demerara rums contribute baking spice and brown sugar notes. A true Zombie is a thing of beauty.
In a shaker cup add:
3/4 oz fresh lime juice
1/4 oz fresh grapefruit juice
1/4 oz homemade cinnamon syrup
1 tsp Grenadine syrup
1/2 John D. Taylor’s Velvet Falernum
4 oz Beach Bum Berry’s Zombie Blend Rum
2 dashes (Herbstura Mixed Angostura and Herbsaint)
Flash blend for 5 seconds and dirty pour into a Zombie Glass (what else?)
Garnish with a spring on mint leaf. Enjoy!
